Positive Aspects: • The music that has been used is effective because you instantly get a sense of what the genre is and the music change is effective because it builds intensity for the audience.
• The colour of the titles and the titles themselves are successful because they create an instant atmosphere for the audience and allow the audience to get a sense for the genre.
• By seeing Leah’s face it allows the audience to know that she is going to be an important character in the story.
• The different cuts of the killer and his/her collage to Leah instantly create a connection for the audience as well as building tension and intensity for the audience.
• The jump like shots of the door at the very start of the opening create an effective enigma for the audience because instantly you feel intrigued as to what is behind the door.
• The use of the CCTV camera is effective because it creates an eerie atmosphere for the audience.
Negative Aspects: • There were too many shots of the table breaking up the flow of the opening.
• The shot of the scissors are a bit dull therefore not having much meaning to the opening unless you know what the scissors were used for.
• The song ended too abruptly, it could have possibly carried on longer.
Positive - Dark Castle immediately suggests the that the genre of the opening is a thriller/horror therefore making it a successful choice of production company. - The eerie non diegetic music compliments the opening itself creating spooky atmosphere which is associated with the genre. Also, further on in the sequence the the music becomes much louder which really goes with the horror film as it's very quick paced. - Enigma's are created well through the clever choice of dim lighting and no diegetic speech so the filming itself really creates an enigma as the the audience question why the two girls are dead and where they are. - The colour effect used at the beginning really goes well with what is on in the opening as it adds to the creepy, mysterious atmosphere of the opening. - The range of camera shots, particularly close ups help identify the characters really well as we become familiar with what they look like, regarding the lack of speech to find out more detail. This appears to fit in with the chosen genre as there is still an element of mystery behind the characters. - Zooms and close ups have again been used effectively to identify important props such as the scissors, telephone, briefcase and the collage of photos in which the mystery person is putting together. - Besides the setting shown at the beginning which is not obvious, the setting has been portrayed well towards the middle with a long shot of the outside area and the car, as well as in side the building. - Costume has been used effectively with the dark black clothing connoting danger and dark themes which goes well with the genre itself. - The titles are really effective as the match the genre well being on a black background, helping again to identify the genre, as well as using an effect which appears to be similar to that used in a horror film with the red writing to connote danger and horror.
Negatives - There should be less focus on the flowers at the beginning as they are very random in comparison to the rest of the opening - A bit of speech or including a voice over in the trailer would help identify the characters more in the opening - More shots of the female character walking into the work building would be useful
Positives: - non-diegetic sound is effective and fits the mood well - good use of camera shots and camera movement; sets the scene - Good use of mise en scene to create an enigma - The straight cuts between the 2 scenes were good to set an theme of inevitability - The editing of the shots making them darker with a sepia tone was useful to create a link between the antagonist and the setting
Improvements: - less shaky movements with the camera at the beginning
